New Heights in Lights

From chandeliers, sconces, table and pendant types, I present my latest foray into fixture diversity, floor lamps. Each is comprised of an array of various brass fixture components taken from other vintage fixtures and mounted on decorative bases such as the unique 1920’s variation as seen on the middle example.

Fixture Fanfare

13" deep by 12" wide - 4' in total with canopy and chain

In my relentless pursuit of the original and unique, no mechanism remains immune to reinvention as witnessed by this visually breezy pendant piece. The main component is comprised of a chromed fan blade cage with additional hardware consisting of a concoction of floor, oil and various other vintage lamp elements. An obvious departure from the usual fixture fare, it is categorized as retro industrial and deemed suitable for any commercial or residential application. Illuminated by two standard clear chandelier bulbs, it comes replete with matching canopy, a generous length of brass chain, all necessary mounting hardware and a very affordable price.

Shining Example

One of the many enjoyable aspects of creating these fixtures is the rejuvenation of the original patina of aging pieces of metal. Just as satisfying is the coincidence with which totally foreign elements of different manufacture magically blend with each other to create an entirely new and original entity. Case in point, the very top aspect of this fixture is a stamped 30’s oval brass canopy now embellished with a vintage finial. Below it, suspended on chain, are two antique pendant arms newly attached to an inverted Italian oval mirror pedestal from which are mounted a miniature canopy and a bronze 20’s lamp base. From it hangs a very attractive horizontally striped pedestal shade that once illuminated a 50’s apartment hallway. This piece can be mounted by chain and canopy or flush on the ceiling.

Light Medication

The central structure of this particular piece is a well disguised vintage medicinal epothecary jar. It is embellished with various and sundry metallic paraphernalia including a hanging oil lamp counterweight casing on its lowest extremity and an inverted brass table base attached to a 3 armed deco fixture element on top from which hang 3 fluted, frosted shades. Mounted inside the jar is a vintage brass socket with the source of illumination being an elongated picture light bulb.

Everything Old is New Again

Never having considered converting a hanging oil lamp to electric (previously considered self-imposed sacrilege), I was newly excited by the concept of applying this unique twist to an old theme. By inverting the arms formerly hanging below the shade that supported the font cap and burner apparatus, those mechanisms are now neatly secured in place above it. A dimmer switch socket was installed and the assembly suspended from an inverted bronze table lamp base arranged in conjunction with several other vintage elements. Finally, the shade band was once again decked out in prisms.

Modern Fluted Glass Pendant

This fixture is a conversion of an older industrial unit to something more exotic. Maintaining its original glass shade, 3 rod and ring support mechanism, it is comprised of a 60’s inverted chromed ceiling mount, an equally shiny cylindrical lamp housing, several other modern elements and a large computer hard drive disk attached by a 3 armed floor lamp socket unit. Another first, it is illuminated by LED strip lights which, in conjunction with the fluted glass, casts a pleasant, ambient glow.

New Direction. New Styles. New Name.

New Styles: Marking my foray into the steam punk or industrial bohemian style, this pendant lamp is based on a weathered aluminum casting sourced from a local recycler and is embellished with a polished computer ring supported by 3 drum kit fasteners. Numerous modern fixture elements, an inverted lamp base and a 3 segment chandelier bulb socket complete its fabrication. It is supplied with a generous length of chromed chain and an equally ornate ceiling canopy.
